Gardening is a part of Shunna Jones’s DNA. Ever since she can remember her pa pa grew tomatoes on the side of his house. She loved eating those huge slicer tomatoes and cucumbers and couldn’t wait till she grew up and had her own garden. Throughout her whole adult life she always kept a small garden no matter where she lived. While taking a break from her career as an Infection Control Nurse, to focus on raising her 1 year old son, she decided to expand her garden. That summer she grew so much produce and ended up giving a lotb to her family, friends and neighbors. The following year, The Earth’s Backyard was created and she began selling her surplus produce at a local Farmer’s Market. Some of the things that are unique about The Earth’s Backyard is the focus on natural growing practices, and growing fruits and vegetables that are seen in cooking from the African diaspora. They also like bringing to market unique fruits, vegetables and herbs not typically seen. Earth’s Backyard is new at the Market this year.

Elk Run Vineyards was founded in 1979. Two years after looking for a suitable vineyard location, the founders choose its Frederick County location for its soil composition, orientation of the land for sun exposure, altitude and its proximity to both Baltimore and D.C. Elk Run is managed by Fred Wilson (viticulturist, enologist and general manager), Carol Wilson (marketing) and Neill Bassford (assistant winemaker and vineyard manager). Bob Cecil joined the business in 1987. He is a Certified Specialist of Wine and focuses on training and external events like Farmers Markets. In 1980 the Wilsons decided to pioneer the first all-vinifera vineyard in Maryland. Grapes planted for whites include: Chardonnay, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, and Pinot Gris. Reds include: Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The total acreage is now roughly 24 acres in vine. Winemaker Fred Wilson has consistently received high awards from regional, national, and international wine competitions, and his wines have earned the respect and praise of wine critics worldwide.
